Des Moines Metro Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Library

Des Moines Metro Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Library

MPO staff is currently drafting Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventories (GHGIs) for member communities based on the year 2019.

Communities will receive notice when their final community-specific inventory is completed. Anticipated date for these deliveries is January 2022.

In the meantime…

As partner agencies report data back, this page will be updated with draft results for community review.

If you have any questions about this initiative, please contact Allison van Pelt.

Starting notes:

Key Terms:
CO2e = Carbon Dioxide emissions
MT = Metric Ton
– This reporting is for emissions in 2019. The lag is intentional due to 1) COVID impacts on human movements in 2020, and 2) confirmed data is more readily available for 2019.
– GHGIs are imperfect. In these figures, some categories may be colored grey, this shows the data was absent or omitted.
– MPO staff is working diligently to include all data possible, however, in some cases data is only partial or not available at all. Within the final reports, all assumptions, gaps, and the methodology for this effort will be documented and published.
– As of this publishing (August 2022), MPO staff has received data from the largest agencies, therefore, the proportions below are good first glances of the final product. The final pieces (water transportation, aviation, waste, etc.) will be incorporated as they arrive, however, these pieces are slivers in the larger community and regional pies (typically 1-5%). The below will well inform any communities interested in exploring mitigation measures.
– It is difficult to grasp metric tons of a gas. If you would like to understand more about this topic, MPO staff suggests starting with MIT’s Climate Portal for details.
– As always, if you want more information and resources about climate action planning (adaptation, mitigation, GHGIs, Today’s Playbook…), check out our Central Iowa Climate Toolbox.
