Comprehensive Safety Action Plan
The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) developed a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan for the Greater Des Moines region, thanks to a $800,000 planning grant from the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program of the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT).
The SS4A Grant Program was established in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill to support the department’s National Roadway Safety Strategy and a goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on the nation’s roadways. This discretionary program will provide $5 billion to $6 billion in grants over the next five years.
A Comprehensive Safety Action Plan is a requirement for subsequent rounds of funding through the SS4A Grant Program. Effectively, once complete, the region’s plan will open the door to future funding opportunities.

Mobilizing For Safety
In June 2025, the MPO submitted an application to the U.S. DOT for FY25 Safe Streets and Roads for All funding. The grant application was titled “Mobilizing for Safety” and included three solution packages to address the safety needs identified in the Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. The grant application was titled “Mobilizing for Safety” and included a package of nine construction projects to address the safety needs identified in the Comprehensive Safety Action Plan.
Safety Dashboard
The MPO maintains a safety dashboard that provides crash data statistics for the MPO planning area and outlines the safety goals included in Mobilizing Tomorrow. The dashboard also provides the High-Injury and High-Risk Networks developed for the Comprehensive Safety Action Plan.

The We All Arrive campaign is an initiative being led by Polk County Health Department. We All Arrive provides a shared messaging campaign that provides:

E-Moto Ordinances
In October 2025, the Polk County Law Enforcement Executives Association (PLEXA) began work on a model ordinance related to E-Moto use in the region. Communities in the MPO planning area are currently in various stages of implementing ordinances following the completion ordinance developed by PLEXA.
