Public asked to share opinions on future roadway capacity projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Residents of Greater Des Moines are invited to share their opinions on 176 roadway capacity projects that could be eligible for federal funding over the next 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)\nis in the process of updating the Long-Range Transportation Plan for the\nGreater Des Moines region. Called Mobilizing Tomorrow, the plan is significant\nbecause roadway capacity projects need to be listed in the plan to be eligible\nfor federal funding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTransportation is vital to how we live and to our economy \u2013\nand how we build it matters,\u201d said Todd Ashby, executive director of the Des\nMoines Area MPO. \u201cWe hope you speak up if you have an opinion about how we\ninvest your federal tax dollars in our regional transportation network.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roadway capacity projects will receive a maximum of 40\npercent of the federal funds allocated annually by the Des Moines Area MPO,\nunder a new set of funding targets approved earlier this year by the MPO Policy\nCommittee. The new funding targets also include 20 percent for bridges, 20\npercent for maintenance, 10 percent for system optimization, and 10 percent for\ntransit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the old funding targets, 60 percent had been going to\nroadway capacity projects, 15 percent to bridges, 10 percent to maintenance and\nsystem optimization, 10 percent for transit, and 5 percent of flexible funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The public can submit comments on the 176 roadway capacity\nprojects using an interactive map at www.dmampo.org\/public-participation\/<\/a>.\nComments can also be given via phone at 515-334-0075 or email at info@dmampo.org<\/a>. The deadline to submit\ncomments is Friday, May 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
