Residents of Greater Des Moines are invited to give their feedback on a draft update to the region’s Long-Range Transportation Plan, Mobilizing Tomorrow.
The long-range transportation plan is updated every five years by the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to address the changing needs and priorities of the community, as well to adjust to evolving technologies and best practices in transportation. The Mobilizing Tomorrow update sets goals for the transportation system out to year 2050, and it outlines how the cities, counties and transit agencies of the metropolitan planning area will invest approximately $600 million in transportation funding over the next 35 years.
The draft document is included below, with links to each of the four chapters and eight appendixes, along with comment forms for each section. Comments will be collected online now through Sunday, November 10.
Comments can also be shared at a public meeting from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at the MPO office, 420 Watson Powell, Jr. Way, Suite 200, Des Moines, IA 50309.
The MPO will review all public comments and revise the plan accordingly as needed. The plan will go before the MPO Policy Committee for final adoption Thursday, November 21, 2019.

Why does this matter?
The Long-Range Transportation Plan helps establish direction for the region’s transportation goals, priorities, projects, and funding. Transportation is a foundational issue, meaning many of the most important issues facing the region — from hunger and affordable housing, to social equity and economic development — need to be addressed, in part, through transportation-related solutions.
